HOW TO USE GMAIL`S ADVANCED SEARCH FEATURES: 0261003579
Gmail’s a Google product, so in fact its powerful search features. But a number of Gmail’s search features are hidden and don’t appear within the Search Options pane. Learn Gmail’s search tricks to master your massive inbox. You’ll also create filters from any search you’ll perform. Filters automatically perform actions on incoming emails, like deleting them, applying a label, or forwarding them to a different email address.
Basic Search Features
Instead of just typing an enquiry query within the search box, click the down arrow to reveal more search options. The search options dialog exposes many of Gmail’s basic search operators. But there are some search options that don’t appear during this dialog. You’ll skip this dialog for basic searches. Perform an enquiry with the search options dialog and you’ll see the search operator you’ll need within the future. For instance, if you type emailtroubles.com into the search box, you’ll see the subsequent search appear within the search box: Useful search operators you’ll access from the essential dialog include:
• To: – look for messages sent to a selected address.
• From: – look for messages sent from a selected address
• Subject: – Search the topic field.
• Label: – Search within a selected label.
• has: attachment – Search just for messages that have attachments
• is: chat – Search only chats.
• In: anywhere – Also look for messages within the spam and trash. By default, Gmail’s search ignores messages within the spam and trash.
Constructing Searches
To put together more complicated searches, you’ll get to know the fundamentals.
• ( ) – Brackets allow you to group search terms. For instance, checking out subject 🙁 how geek) would only return messages with the words “how” and “geek” in their discipline. If you look for subject: how geek, you’d get messages with “how” within the subject and “geek” anywhere in the message.
• OR – OR, which must be in capital letters, allows you to look for one term or another. For instance, subject 🙁 how OR geek) would return messages with the word “how” or the word “geek” in their titles. You’ll also combine other terms with the OR. For instance, from: emailtroubles.com OR has: attachment would look for messages that are either from emailtroubles.com or have attachments.
• ““– Quotes allow you to look for a particular phrase, a bit like in Google. Checking out “exact phrase” only returns messages that contain the precise phrase. You’ll combine this with other operators. For instance, subject:”exact phrase” only returns messages that have “exact phrase” in their discipline.
• – – The hyphen, or sign, allows looking for messages that don’t contain a selected term. For instance, look for -from: emailtroubles.com and you’ll only see messages that aren’t from emailtroubles.com.
Hidden Search Tricks
You can access many search operators from the search options dialog, but some are hidden. Here’s an inventory of the hidden ones:
• List: – The list: operator allows you to look for messages on a list. For instance, list:[email protected] would return all messages on the [email protected] list.
• Filename: – The filename: operator allows you to look for a selected file attachment. For instance, file:example.pdf would return emails with a file named example.pdf attached.
• is: important, label: important – If you employ Gmail’s priority inbox, you’ll use the is: important or label: important operators to look only important or unimportant emails.
• has: yellow-star has: red-star has: green-check, etc. – If you employ differing types of stars (see the celebs section on Gmail’s general settings pane), you’ll look for messages with a selected sort of star.
• cc: bcc: – The cc: and bcc: features allow you to look for messages where a selected address was carbon copied or blind carbon copied. For instance, cc:[email protected] returns messages where [email protected] was carbon copied. You can’t use the bcc: operator to look for messages where you were blind carbon copied, only messages where you bcc’d people.
• delivered to: – The delivered to: operator looks for messages delivered to a selected address. For instance, if you’ve got multiple accounts within the same Gmail inbox, you’ll use this operator to seek out the messages sent to a selected address. Use deliveredto:[email protected] to seek out messages delivered to [email protected].
Saving a Filter
Create a filter to automatically perform actions when a message matches a selected search. To make a filter, click the down arrow again, and then click the “Create filter with this search” option. Select an action and click on the “Create filter” button. You’ll manage your filters from the Filters pane on Gmail’s settings page. Filters also can be wont to block email addresses. We’ve covered using filters to dam your crazy ex within the past.
